EXCLUSIVE: Voltage Pictures has acquired worldwide rights excluding Eastern Europe to Romanian box office smash The Race and will commence talks with EFM buyers in Berlin next month.

Anghel Damian and Millo Simulov directed from the screenplay by Damian based on an idea by Cristian Popa. The feature, described by Voltage as an “emotionally driven story of friendship, betrayal, and family” in the vein of the Fast & Furious franchise, centres on Andrei, a gifted young mechanic drawn into a war between two rival factions battling for dominance in the high-stakes world of car racing.

Against this backdrop, Andrei takes part in a race in which Europe’s top 10 drivers compete to win a major cash prize and ownership of every participating car. The cast includes Codin Maticiuc, Andi Vasluianu, Stefan Iancu, Andy Popescu, Levent Sali, and Aris Negoita.

The Race was produced by Vertical Content and released through Vertical Entertainment in Romania last year as Cursa, becoming one of the five highest-grossing Romanian films of all time on $1.9m.

Production took place entirely in Romania including the sinous Transfagarasan Highway in the Carpathian Mountains, which the British TV show Top Gear once called the best road in the world. Producers include Anca Truta, Maticiuc, Alex Cseh, Popescu, and Simulov.

Alexandra Cocean, Voltage president, global sales and distribution, said: “The Race is a rare European action title with real box office proof and global appeal. Its scale, authenticity, and racing spectacle make it a strong fit for audiences worldwide.”

Voltage’s EFM slate includes the cyberpunk thriller Kill Code.
