EXCLUSIVE: UK-based WestEnd Films has boarded worldwide sales for thriller The Highway That Eats People, directed by American Psycho filmmaker Mary Harron.
Harron has co-written the script with her American Psycho collaborator, Guinevere Turner.
It is adapted from the 2010 novel The Orange Eats Creeps by Grace Krilanovich.
Bones & All star Anna Cobb and The Return actor Charlie Plummer star in the story of a teenage runaway on the very outskirts of society, in desperate search for her missing foster sister. Accompanied by a motley group of young outsiders, she roams a dark and dangerous highway where a violent serial killer lurks, preying on the weak.
Further cast include Rory Culkin, Jim Gaffigan, Jack Haven and Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney.
The film is produced by Emily Kim Wiedemann of US outfit Greencard Pictures, Euphoria costume designer Heidi Bivens, Kevin Shulman and Joshua Astrachan of New York-based production company Animal Kingdom.
Production is set to begin in autumn in the US. WestEnd Films will handle all international rights, will co-rep domestic rights with WME Independent — and will introduce the project to buyers in Cannes.
Harron said: “I am very excited to work with WestEnd Films to bring The Highway That Eats People to the screen. The story is both violent and darkly funny, frightening and poignant — a road movie through a hallucinatory American no man’s land that I believe is perfectly attuned to these unsettling times.”
‘‘Mary’s vision for this dark, unsettling and very modern fairytale blends chilling terror, fantasy and heartbreaking, unpredictable characters to create what we believe will be a wild and unique experience for audiences worldwide,” added WestEnds’s Maya Amsellem. “We couldn’t be more excited to be working with her, this brilliant cast — and the whole team — on this thrilling film.”
