Host and Screen’s editor-in-chief Matt Mueller is joined by deputy editor Louise Tutt and senior reporter, UK & international Ben Dalton to discuss what themes emerged from the panels, including the importance of angel investors and the need for more tax relief.
Referencing the recent news that UK distributor True Brit has entered administration, Tutt said: “It underlines the challenges that not only do you have to make the films, you have to get them in front of audiences, which is where one of the possible interventions that was echoed throughout the day was talk for a possible tax relief on P&A for UK indie films and also the VAT relief on cinema tickets.”
Mueller added: ”Harriet [Finney] from the BFI said in the ’Future Thinking’ session that that’s definitely something government is still considering and talking about. I don’t know if we’ll see it in the next budget at the end of October, but it’s definitely something that they’re still thinking about.”
The Screen Summit took place on September 29 at the BFI Southbank.
The Screen Podcast is produced by Ellie Calnan, with Wendy Mitchell serving as editorial director. New episodes every Thursday.
