UPDATED: The Screen Awards revealed its 2013 winners tonight (October 30), recognising excellence in UK marketing, distribution and exhibition.

The awards were handed out at a glamorous ceremony at Park Plaza Riverbank in London. Broadcaster Edith Bowman hosted the event for the second year.

Universal took home the hotly contested distributor of the year award, with highly commended notices for Arrow Films and Lionsgate UK.

Sony’s Skyfall took home theatrical campaign of the year.

Picturehouse and Vue triumphed in the newly added exhibition categories.

The rising star prize was bestowed on Andy Green from Organic.

Film4 had three wins on the night, with Fox, Metrodome, Picturehouse Entertainment and Universal each celebrating double wins.

Alan North, who retired this summer from the Walt Disney Company and previously worked at Universal, Rank, and Odeon, was honoured with the Film Distributors’ Association Lifetime Achievement Award. His former colleague Daniel Battsek flew in from New York to present North with the award.

Battsek said: “He could really work and get the maximum out of a film whatever its size…He squeezed every last booking from even the tightest of distributors.” Battsek added that “sales directors as a breed are under appreciated in the UK.”

North was typically humble: “Thank you to the Film Distributors Association and its members. I do feel somewhat like a fraud — being able to indulge my passions in films for 47 years and getting paid for it is not a bad way to make a living.” He dedicated the award to “all those characters” he’s met over the decades “who made it so fun.”

FDA Chief Executive, Mark Batey, said: “Alan’s working-life passion has been to get films on to screens for UK audiences to experience – a passion that has never left him some five decades and many hundreds of films later. He’s been a mentor and friend to many, and is one of those generous characters whose retirement leaves the industry feeling impoverished. FDA warmly congratulates Alan on this splendidly deserved, special award.”

Screen Editor Wendy Mitchell told the 500 assembled guests: “I’m thrilled that companies and films of all sizes and shapes are honoured tonight. Those can be the indie underdogs but also not overlooking how competitive the studio blockbusters are and how studios also have to keep improving and honing their work…Several judges remarked  to me about the high quality of all the entries this year and that it was a shame not all of them could be given prizes. In some of the major categories it came down to just one vote. That’s a testament to the great nominations we had this year.”
