Austria is strengthening its position as a filmmaking destination for international productions on the back of a heady mix of experienced and established local crews, breathtaking locations and ongoing positives from FISAplus, the country’s internationally focused financial incentive.

ABA — FILM in AUSTRIA, the federal film commission that is part of the Austrian Business Agency (ABA), advises on the incentive and serves as the central point of contact for international film, TV and streaming productions planning to shoot in Austria.

An automatic non-repayable subsidy, the incentive is worth up to 35% of film production expenditure in Austria, up to a maximum of $5.9m (€5m) per film and $8.8m (€7.5m) per series.

It also offers support for projects that only do post-production, while putting an emphasis on green production and targeted measures to close the gender gap in the film and TV production sector, notes Austria’s film commissioner Nina‑Anica Keidies. There had been a steady rise in applications for both the Green Filming Bonus and the Gender Gap Financing national film incentives.

The FISAplus funding portal re-opened at the beginning of 2026, and submissions remain possible. ABA — FILM in AUSTRIA says the portal will remain open until the last project that can be accommodated within the available budget has been contractually confirmed.

Obtaining government backing highlights how effective the incentive has proved in bringing international producers and productions to Austria. This sustained momentum is reflected in production figures from ABA — FILM in AUSTRIA. In 2025, a total of 49 film and television projects were realised in Austria funded by FISAplus, including 19 Austrian films or series and nine international co-productions with Austrian participation.

In addition, 18 international films or series were produced in Austria as service productions, while a further three international post-productions were realised in the country. Together, these numbers underline a healthy, resilient and steadily evolving audiovisual landscape.

One upcoming highlight is the second series of Netflix-backed Crooks, released in April, which showcases Austria’s ability to mount HETV projects.

ABA — FILM in AUSTRIA supports producers with location scouting, consulting on funding and connecting local partners with talent.

Through close co-operation with regional film commissions and international industry networks, ABA — FILM in AUSTRIA is focused on showcasing Austria as a competitive, reliable and creatively diverse filming destination.

Austria offers a range of locations within short distances, from urban environments to alpine landscapes, enabling efficient and flexible production workflows.

International productions landing in Austria in the last 18 months have included Guy Ritchie’s action feature Fountain Of Youth, an Apple/Skydance production starring Natalie Portman and John Krasinski. It was granted $2.5m (€2.1m) in FISAplus funding, working with local production company Onnoo Two Film, to facilitate the funding and production.

The film shot for a week in Vienna including in the National Library’s State Hall, and in public spaces such as the Heldenplatz (in front of the Hofburg Palace) and Schwarzenbergplatz. It also filmed in the city’s sewers, an onscreen sight familiar to cinephiles thanks to Orson Welles’ The Third Man.

Jaume Collet-Serra’s Cliffhanger reboot, starring Lily James and Pierce Brosnan, shot in Austria’s East Tyrol region of the Lienz Dolomites in November 2024. In addition to the FISAplus backing, the project secured funding from Austria’s Cine Tirol Film Commission when it filmed across the mountain range, which stretches across East Tyrol and Carinthia.

HQ7 Studios on the outskirts of Vienna boasts two soundproof stages, measuring approximately 1,000 and 2,000 square metres, a brand-new LED wall, as well as offices, workshops and warehouse space, fixed sets, parking and round-the-clock access. The facility was launched by Hafen Wien and HQ7 Studios, a joint venture between CC Real International and 3MPG.
