GMM Tai Hub's Kung Fu Tootsie has become the first Thai film to top the box office chart in July which is overwhelmed with Hollywood blockbusters.

Opening last Thursday on 129 prints, the action comedy grossed $1.3m (40m baht) over its first four days and knocked last week's number one Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (which grossed $598,000) to second place.

Harry Potter and other big Hollywood titles such as Transformers and Die Hard 4.0 have been dominating the box office in the month of July in which no Thai release was scheduled until Kung Fu Tootsie's opening on July 19.

The story is about a martial arts fighter of 'Lady Boxing' who has to hold back his feminine tendencies to paint his nails and wear beautiful dresses when his long lost gangster brother enlists him to head a triad gang.

It is directed by Jaturong Pholboon who last year made ghost comedy See How They Run.

GTH has two more releases lined up for this year: suspense horror Body by Paween Purijitpanya and comedy Bedside Detective by Dear Dakanda director Khomkrit Treewimol.
