Following a loud Comic-Con presentation in July, Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot took command of the North American box office in its opening session.

The $65m estimated launch beat in one fell swoop the lifetime total of Warner Bros’ TNMT in 2007, which finished on $54.1m. Megan Fox and Will Arnett star in Paramount’s reboot.

On Sunday afternoon (August 10) Paramount announced it had greenlit a sequel that will open on June 3, 2016.

After Guardians Of The Galaxy scored the biggest August debut in history last weekend, this delivered the fourth biggest, behind the aforementioned on $94.3m, 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum on $69.3m and 2001’s Rush Hour 2 on $67.4m.

In a busy session that saw the top 12 finish a little less than 1% ahead of last weekend and beat the comparable period of 2013 by 18%, Marvel Studios’ Guardians Of The Galaxy slipped to number two on $41.5m to reach $175.9m after two sessions through Buena Vista.

Guardians added $7.4m from Imax worldwide for $30m and took $4.6m from 354 North American screens to boost the tally to $20m.

Warner Bros opened New Line’s action thriller Into The Storm in third place on $18m, Buena Vista opened Participant Media’s Helen Mirren drama The Hundred-Foot Journey at number four on $11.1m and Lionsgate-Summit’s music drama Step Up: All In arrived at number six on $6.6m.

EuropaCorp’s action thriller Lucy is closing in on $100m and ranks fifth on $97.4m after three weekends.

IFC’s Boyhood felt the presence of the new arrivals in terms of its position and fell two places to number 13, However actual box office was hardly affected at all as the coming-of-age drama grossed a further $2.1m from 507 after expanding by 107 theatres. It stands at a notable $10.7m after five weekends.

James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D arrived through DisruptiveLA on $150,900 from 304 sites, while CBS Films released What If in 20 theatres for $130,000.

Next weekend’s wide releases are: The Weinstein Company’s YA adaptation The Giver starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep; Lionsgate’s The Expendables 3 starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas and virtually the entire action firmament; and the Fox comedy Let’s Be Cops on Wednesday August 13 with Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans and Andy Garcia.
