Disney Research Zurich (DRZ)  has been awarded the Tell Award “for most significant Swiss Technology and Innovation Investment in 2009” in recognition of the Walt Disney Company’s inward investment into the Greater Zurich Area.

Officially launched at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich at the end of April, DRZ is working with 30 computer scientists and 10 PhD research students on the development of more than 30 projects at the lab. One, for example, is addressing capturing and animating ofrealistic representations of human faces for use by Disney’s animation studios, game divisions and theme parks.

“The cooperation between Disney and ETH Zurich is quite unique and Europe and has already earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading innovation laboratories for computer animation,” commented Markus Gross, DRZ head and Professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. “We are on a par with several of ETH Zurich’s strategic industrial partnerships, such as the IBM Research Lab in Rüschlikon.”

The Tell Award will be presented to DRZ at a gala ceremony at the Swiss embassy in Washington on November 8.
