The 10th Era New Horizons International Film Festival will dedicate programming to the 10th anniversary of the death of Polish cinema great Wojciech Jerzy Has, as well as offering retrospectives of Jean-Luc Godard and the Brothers Quay.

This year’s films, 280 in total from more than 50 countries, will be screened at the festival with a particular focus on Turkish cinematography, including a retrospective of the multi award-winning writer-director Zeki Demirkubuz.

Barely recognized in Poland, Demirkubuz is best known as one of the first generation of independent Turkish filmmakers. He made his debut in 1994 with C Blok, following this up with the acclaimed Innocence in 1997. There will be around 30 Turkish films screened across the festival.  

 Also being performed is a contemporary opera created by Dutch composer Michel van der Aa. This special event will encompass film, music and theatre beginning with an adaptation of The Book of Disquiet – a celebrated work by Portuguese modernist Fernando Pessoi – which will be narrated by Oscar-nominated German actor Klaus Maria Brandauer.

An art installation, comprising a public projection, has been designed by Polish artist Krzysztof Wodiczko and will be exhibited throughout the festival.

Other retrospectives are planned for Laura Mulvey and Daniel Szczechura.

New Horizons will take place in Wroclaw, Poland from 22 July – 1 August.

For the first time this year, the festival will offer a FIPRESCI prize as well as the international competition, films on art competition, and new Polish films competition awards.
