The International Film Festival Rotterdam (Jan 23-Feb 3) has unveiled the full list of 16 films, including 8 world premieres, competing for the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition.

Three Tigers (worth €15,000 each) will be awarded in the competition for first or second features.

Five competing films have received support from Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund and three were launched as project at CineMart.

The jury is comprised of Iranian actress Fatemeh Motamedarya; Russian writer and filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa; Dutch filmmaker Kees Hin; Seville European Film Festival artistic director José Luis Cienfuegos; and Chinese visual artist and filmmaker Ai Weiwei, who will judge the competition films from his home in Beijing. Loznitsa’s Cannes Competitor In the Fog will screen in Rotterdam’s Spectrum programme and the world premiere of his short film Letter will be part of the Tiger Awards Competition for Short Films. Ai Weiwei’s documentary Ping’an Yueqing screens in Spectrum.

The diverse films in the competition include Yang Lina’s genre-bending Asian ghost story Longing For The Rain; Rotterdam-based Ricky Rijneke’s Hungary-set drama Silent Ones starring Orsi Toth; Mira Fornay’s Foxes follow-up My Dog Killer [pictured]; sex-worker story Karaoke Girl by Thailand’s Visra Vichit Vadakan; Brooklyn-set coming of age story It Felt Like Love; the feature directorial debut from Ulrich Seidl collaborator Daniel Hoesl; and 10 to 11 director Pelin Esmer’s second feature Watchtower.
