MDA strikes four-year partnership with Tiger Gate

The slate of projects, which are intended for both theatrical and TV distribution, will be jointly selected and financed by Tiger Gate and the MDA.

Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) has formed a four-year strategic partnership with Hong Kong-based Tiger Gate Entertainment to commission a slate of films in the action, horror and thriller genres for worldwide distribution.

The projects, which are intended for both theatrical and TV distribution, will be jointly selected and financed by Tiger Gate and the MDA. Submissions will be accepted from anywhere in the world, but they must have a Singaporean co-production partner on board.

Tiger Gate, a joint venture between Lionsgate and Saban Capital Group, will handle distribution of selected projects across all platforms – including theatrical – within Asia, while Lionsgate will manage all distribution outside Asia.

Launched last year, Tiger Gate is a film and TV production and distribution outfit and has launched two pay-TV channels – action channel KIX and thriller/horror channel Thrill – which have so far secured distribution in Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

“There is significant synergy between MDA and Tiger Gate, and we believe the partnership will prove to be a win-win situation for all parties involved,” said Tiger Gate CEO William Pfeiffer.

The initiative, which is part of the MDA’s push to encourage co-productions between Singaporean and international filmmakers, pushes the total amount of private funds available in Singapore to more than $1.1bn.

Other funds include the $75m MDA-Hyde Park-Imagenation alliance announced last October and a $70m Integrated Media Fund by Salon Media Management, a Singapore-based subsidiary of the Salon Film Group in Hong Kong.
