The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market has selected 24 projects for its 2026 edition and has partnered with Canada’s Frontières platform to showcase upcoming genre titles.
The 7th edition of the financing and development platform is set to take place from October 28-30 during TIFFCOM, the content market of Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF).

A new alliance with Frontières, the genre film co-production market organised by the Fantasia International Film Festival, resulted in the selection of more genre projects this year. Ranging from indigenous horror to near-future psychological thrillers, they hail from countries including Thailand, Nepal and Brazil.
The lineup includes She, Crododile, a body horror feature from Brazil’s Gabriela Amaral Almeida, who was at Tokyo in 2018 with The Father’s Shadow.
The Land Of Jinn is the latest from emerging Indonesian filmmaker Kevin Rahardjo, who previously co-directed Smothered, and is produced by KawanKawan Media, whose credits include 24 Hours With Gaspar, Makbul Mubarak’s Autobiography, Renoir and Tiger Stripes.
The genre lineup also includes Trinity, a thriller from acclaimed Singaporean director Boo Junfeng, produced by Raymond Phathanavirangoon. Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Diep will return to TGFM with The Saddest Stories On Earth after being selected last year with 1982, which is set to premiere at Busan next month.
”This partnership is a fantastic opportunity to connect our genre filmmaking communities, open new doors for emerging projects, and build meaningful bridges between our markets,” said Tania Morissette, deputy director of Frontières.
Animated projects in the lineup include omnibus horror A Banquet For Hungry Ghosts from the production team behind The Violinist, winner of best film at this year’s Annecy; and Back To Tomioka, based on a French graphic novel that deals with the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. Further animated works include Mahora from Japan’s Ayumi Moriyama, who was a key animator on TV series Pokémon before becoming a director.
Now in its third year, TGFM’s partnership with Cinecittà brings three projects including Italian-Japanese international co-productions. Among them is The Blue Breaks from Takuya Uchiyama, whose Numb premiered in Panorama at the Berlinale in February.
Further notable projects include 38.83 from Hong Kong’s Vincci Cheuk, which won two prizes at the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) in March; and Songsak Mongkolthong’s Thai action horror Cher starring Rattanawadee Wongthong from the blockbuster Death Whisperer franchise.
The market will also host its first open pitch event in cooperation with Imagica Group. Taking place on October 28, 10 projects out of the 24 – including five from the Frontieres Showcase – will present their pitches.
To qualify, projects must have 60% of their total budget secured and include an Asian element.
One-to-one meetings with potential investors including producers, sales agents, distributors and financiers will take place at the Tokyo Port City Takeshiba Port Studio. TGFM is hosted by Unijapan, the industry body that organises TIFFCOM.
Films at previous editions include Tafael Manuel’s Filipinana, which won a special jury award at Sundance in January and went on to play the Berlinale; Kamila Andini’s Four Seasons In Java, set to world premiere at Toronto this month before playing Tokyo; and Sompot Chidgasornpongse’s 9 Temples To Heaven, which premiered in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes and will open Bangkok International Film Festival on September 13.
