Tran Anh Hung’s Norwegian Wood has passed censorship in mainland China and will be released in the territory later this year through China Film and Shanghai Huayu Film Company.

The film, an adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s bestseller, is set to receive a special screening at the on-going Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), where Tran is serving on the main competition jury.

One of the stars of the film, popular Japanese actor Kenichi Matsuyama, will also meet the audience and talk about the film at the special SIFF screening.

Sold internationally by Fortissimo Films, Norwegian Wood is produced by Japan’s Asmik Ace and Fuji TV. It received its world premiere at last year’s Venice International Film Festival and has been sold widely around the world. Rinko Kikuchi and Kiko Mizuhara also star.

China Film and Shanghai Huayu are hoping to release the film in late August. It’s understood that the censors only asked for a few cuts.
