Walt Disney SMPI’s Up

Up

Walt Disney SMPI’s Up enjoyed one of the bestweekends of its run at the international box office, grossing $21.7m. Nearly half came from opening in the UK on $10.1m (£6.4m)from 411 screens, with a big-screen average of $24,600. With takings 86% up on the previous weekend, the animated adventure surged past the $250m mark internationally, with worldwide gross now at $550m. Up has its last round of European openings this weekend before its final release in Japan on December 5.

Agora

Alejandro Amenabar’s English-language historical drama Agora was the highest new entry this week, opening through Fox International at home in Spain. It made sixth place in the international chart and number one in Spain with a gross of $7.9m, double that of a typically strong studio opening in the market. This puts Agora in line to become the most successful local film of the year in Spain ahead of Fuga De Cerebros, another Fox release, which has a total gross of $9.9m. The $70m Agora is one of the mostexpensive Spanish films ever made, and stars Rachel Weisz as the fourth century philosopher Hypatia.

Männerherzen

In Germany, writer-director Simon Verhoeven’s comedy Männerherzen, starring local superstar Til Schweiger, enjoyed a strong start, taking $4.8m from 587 screens for Warner Bros. To date, the film has grossed $5.6m from 685 screens in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Zombieland

Comedy-horror Zombieland opened for Sony Picture Releasing International in five territories over the weekend, generating $3.1m from 633 screens. Key results include a first-place debut in Russia ($1.6m from 330 screens) and a second-place start in the UK ($2m from 298). Zombieland, which stars Woody Harrelson, has a staggered release schedule through the rest of the year and into January.
