The latest assault in Netflix’s week of shock and awe sees a four-film deal with Adam Sandler that will stream exclusively in nearly 50 countries where the service operates.

Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and Netflix will jointly develop the projects. Sandler will produce and star.

Further details about genre or storylines were unavailable at time of writing.

“When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said ‘yes’ for one reason and one reason only… Netflix rhymes with ‘wet chicks,’” said Sandler in a statement. “Let the streaming begin!”

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said: “People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the US but all over the world.”

It remains to be seen how US theatre owners will react to the development after it emerged that major exhibition chains carrying Imax screens will boycott The Weinstein Company’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel following its simultaneous exclusive debut on Netflix and on Imax screens in August 2015.
