Distribution round-up: Toronto’s Frances Ha, The Last Gladiator

IFC Films announced on Thursday (20) it will release Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha in North and Latin America, while Phase 4 has acquired Alex Gibney’s ice hockey documentary The Last Gladiator.

Frances Ha stars Greta Gerwig as a carefree dreamer in New York. Baumbach wrote the screenplay with Gerwig and produced alongside Lila Yacoub, Scott Rudin and Rodrigo Teixeira. Fernando Loureiro and Lourenço Sant’ Anna of RT Features served as executive producers.

Sundance Selects/IFC Films svp of acquisitions and productions Arianna Bocco brokered the deal with UTA on behalf of the filmmakers and RT.

Phase 4 Films picked up North American rights to The Last Gladiators and will open the film in Canada in October and in the US in early 2013. The film follows the professional career and personal life of team enforcer Chris “Knuckles” Nilan. Phase 4’s Larry Greenberg and Sam Posner negotiated the deal with Josh Braun of Submarine and Anne Atkinson of Pryor Cashman LLP on behalf of the filmmakers. 

  • Music Box Films has acquired all US and Canadian rights to Travis Fine’s Any Day Now and will release in theatres in December. Preferred Content’s Christine D’Souza and Kevin Iwashina negotiated for the filmmakers with Music Box’s William Schopf and Ed Arentz.
