Cannes Jury Prize winner Persepolis has been selected to represent France in its bid to snag a nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. France's CNC announced the selection of Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's animated work on Monday evening.

Each year, the CNC chooses France's Oscar entry by committee. The CNC committee this year included Cannes general manager Thierry Fremaux, Unifrance president Margaret Menegoz and president of the French academy of motion pictures Alain Terzian.

Persepolis, based on Satrapi's comics about the coming of age of a young Iranian girl, was released in France on June 27 by Diaphana Distribution. International sales are handled by Celluloid Dreams.

The film was chosen over other high profile French titles like La Vie En Rose, which has been a huge success in the US with a gross of $9.8m, and Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell And The Butterfly which was shot in French with French actors and some French finance, but directed by an American.

Last year's French representative, Days Of Glory, by Rachid Bouchareb, went on to a nomination as did 2005's Merry Christmas from Christian Carion, though neither left the Kodak Theatre victorious.
