Warner Bros has picked up Indian rights to locally-produced CG animated feature Ramayana The Epic and plans to release it across the country on October 15.

Produced by Ketan Mehta’s Maya Digital Studio, the film is a re-telling of key stories in Indian epic the Ramayana, which also provided inspiration for Mani Ratnam’s recent global release Raavan.

Maya Digital creative chief Chetan Desai directed the film with Deepa Sahi and Niraj Bhukhanwala as producers. The creative team of around 400 artists and technicians worked on the project for more than two years.

Renowned Indian actors Manoj Bajpayee and Juhi Chawla are providing the voices for the main characters of Ram and Sita.

Warner is planning a 500-print release of the Hindi-language version of the film, and is also preparing English, Tamil, Telegu and possibly other regional-language releases.

Established by Mehta and Sahi ten years ago, Maya Digital produced the popular Indian kids TV show Captain Vyom and has worked for clients including the BBC, Electronic Arts, Rainbow and Activision. Ramayana is the studio’s first full-length feature film.

Mehta is a leading Indian auteur with credits including Mirch Masala, The Rising: Ballad Of Mangal Pandey and most recently Colours Of Passion which premiered at the London Film Festival last year.

Sahi is an actress, writer and producer who is currently making her directorial debut with romantic comedy Tere Mere Phere, starring Vinay Pathak and Riya Sen.
