Following on from its success with Downfall and The Lives Of Others, German sales outfit Beta Cinema is scoring global heat on two new German epics.
Max Faerberboeck's $17.5m Anonyma - A Woman In Berlin is a Second World War drama produced by Constantin Film and starring Nina Hoss and August Diehl. It has now gone to A-Film (Benelux), Shapira (Israel), Monolith (Poland), Blitz (former Yugoslavia) and Bonton (Czech Republic).
Meanwhile, Beta's costume drama Effi, based on Theodor Fontane's classic
nineteenth century novel and starring Julia Jentsch (Sophie Scholl, The Edukators) and Sebastian Koch (The Lives Of Others, Black Book), has gone to A-Film (Benelux) and to Blitz (Former Yugoslavia.) US buyers are already circling the project, which is also produced by Constantin Film. Delivery is due next autumn.
During the market, Beta has closed another major deal on Sergei Bodrov's riproaring epic Mongol, about the young warrior Genghiz Khan. The film has now gone to Svensk in Sweden. The only major territories left on Mongol are Spain and Japan.
Beta has also added another new title to its slate, Vanessa Jopp's X-Filme produced comedy of relationships, Messy Christmas, starring Martina Gedeck and Heino Ferch (Downfall). Released in Germany by X-Verleih later this year, the film will be presented to buyers in Berlin.
Here at the AFM, Beta has also been wrapping up some smaller territories on The Counterfeiters, which has now been sold to Colombia and the Former Yugoslavia
