EXCLUSIVE: Amit Kumar, director of award-winning short The Bypass, is gearing up to shoot his debut feature, The Monsoon Shootout, as a co-production between the UK, India, Netherlands and France.

Set during the monsoon in the rain-lashed badlands of Mumbai, the triptych thriller revolves around a rookie cop who must decide whether to shoot or not to shoot. Production is scheduled to start in Mumbai in the depths of the monsoon season in July.

UK producer Trevor Ingman’s Yaffle Films developed the project with the support from the UK Film Council. Yaffle will co-produce with Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s production house, Anurag Kashyap Films, and Pardesi Films from the Netherlands in association with Arte France.

The DoP is Rajeev Ravi who worked on Kashyap’s Dev D, No Smoking and Venice title That Girl In Yellow Boots. He also shot The Bypass, produced by Film4 and the UKFC’s Cinema Extreme, which won awards at both the London and Milan film festivals.

Arte France’s Francois Sauvagnargues said: “We are always excited to be working with new and exciting directors, and we are thrilled to be involved in a genre movie in India, and a story that speaks to an international audience.”
