Participants up 60% to 340, with two-thirds from Asia.

The second Asia-Pacific/Europe documentary co-production Rendezvous, Asian Side of the Doc closed last week with record participation. Up 60% year-on-year, the event’s 340 participants, two thirds of which were from Asia, were from 26 countries.

Companies attending to meet with project filmmakers included A&E Asia, Aljazeera Asia, CCTV, Discovery Asia, EBS, KBS, HKTV, QTV, MBC, MDA, National Geographic Asia, NHK, Arte, BBC 4, France Télévisions, DR Denmark, and the Sundance Institute.

The Asian Side of the Doc awarded three projects as follows:

-    Best Asian Project: A Bitter Sweet Joke (South Korea) Gong Bang Productions & EBS

-    Best International Project: In the Key of David Lai (Canada / China / Japan) Necessary Illusions, Joy Le Li Productions, NHK

-    Best Asian Side of the Doc Pitch: Here Comes Uncle Joe (Korea / Japan) Boda Media Group & NHK 

The event was organized by Sunny Side of the Doc, Bang Productions, CNEX and Chosun Ilbo in Seoul, March 6-10.

The third Asian Side of the Doc is set to take place in March 2012 in Singapore with backing from the MDA.
