UPDATED JUNE 23: Powered by a number one Chinese debut, Disney’s fantasy tale came in higher than estimates on $47.9m to edge out DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon 2 on $43.2m, according to weekend estimates.
UPDATE: The fantasy drama starring Angelina Jolie has reached a formidable $340.8m and opened top in China on $21.8m according to confirmed numbers issued by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International executives on Monday (23).
At $526.8m, Maleficent ranks as the biggest live-action film of Jolie’s career and has grossed $40.4m in Mexico, $34.8m in Russia, $25.7m in the UK and $24.2m in Brazil. It opens in Japan on July 4. Frozen added $3.3m for $858.4m.
UPDATE: Meanwhile Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon 2 used a wave of new markets to climb to $76.9m through Fox International.
The film has just over one more week as the sole studio family animation in the marketplace before Relativity’s animation Earth To Echo opens on July 4. Disney’s Planes: Fire And Rescue arrives on July 18.
Dragon 2 claimed the number one spot in more than 30 markets, scoring the second highest animated launch ever in Brazil on a confirmed $6.7m from 905 screens and arrived at number one in Mexico on $6.9m from the considerably larger footprint of 2,437.
Both results were bigger than those of the 2010 predecessor by a factor of at least 2.7.
Australia delivered number one on the biggest individual result out of 53 markets for the weekend, generating $8.1m from 501. Argentina’s $1.4m from 304 resulted in DreamWorks Animation’s third biggest debut in the market.
Young adult phenomenon The Fault In Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort added a confirmed $19.9m from 46 markets to stand at $64.9m, powered by a superb $5.8m arrival in the UK from 507 that Fox claimed to be bigger than the opening weekend of Twilight.
Brazil produced $4.3m from 641 in the third weekend for $18.3m, while Mexico has delivered $10.9m after three.
X-Men: Days Of Future Past grossed a confirmed $11.9m from 47 for $478m and ranks as the biggest international performer in the series by far. The superheroes scored a mighty $1.7m number one debut in Venezuela from 123.
China remains the top market on $ 113.9m, followed by the UK on $43.5m and South Korea on $32.5m, all after five sessions.
A buoyant weekend for Fox International was rounded out by The Other Woman, the Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz comedy that crossed $100m to reach a confirmed $102.1m from 38 markets. It opened top in France on $1.4m from 387 and second in Italy on $528,000 from 316, while Spain added $374,000 from 304 for $1.1m after two weekends.
UPDATE: Warner Bros Pictures International’s Edge Of Tomorrow crossed $200m thanks to a confirmed $21.3m session from 65 markets.
The Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt sci-fi action stands at $218.2m and finished top in South Korea for the third consecutive session as $5.4m form 638 resulted in $32.1m.
Edge pulled in approximately $4.8m from 2,130 in China for a confirmed $60.2m after three sessions. Russia delivered around $2.6m from 1,111 for a confirmed $19.3m after three while the UK stands at $11.1m.
Godzilla grossed a confirmed $14.9m from 57 markets for $282.2m and ranked second in its second weekend in China on a confirmed $13.8m from approximately 6,200 screens to climb to a powerful $67.7m.
Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys complemented a disappointing fourth place North American debut with an anaemic $1.6m haul from 1,106 screens in nine markets that struggled to compete with other studio offerings and the World Cup.
The Four Seasons musical biopic arrived in the UK on $706,000 from 449 screens and $455,000 from 270 in France. Italy delivered a third place debut on $300,000 from 279.
The Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rom-com Blended grossed $6.5m for $21.9m and opened in Russia on $2.4m from 1,004 screens in second place.
UPDATE: Sony Pictures Releasing International’s comedy sequel 22 Jump Street starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum generated a confirmed $14.1m from 3 territories to boost the early running total to $38.4m. It opened top in Australia on $6.5m from 359 screens.
Noah has reached $255m through Paramount Pictures International, which is gearing up for the launch of Transformers: Age Of Extinction in 37 markets this week.
UPDATE: Universal Pictures International’s A Million Ways To Die In The West added $2.3m for $30.7m, while Neighbors climbed to $92.5m following a $3.1m weekend.Ocho Apellidos Vascos (Spanish Affairs) stands at $76.5m.
