Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has set Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or winner Amour for a Dec 19 US launch.

The film, which will open in New York and Los Angeles, is Haneke’s third to go through SPC. The distributor previously handled Caché, which grossed $3.6m domestically after its Dec 23, 2005 release, and The White Ribbon, which took $2.2m after opening on Dec30, 2009.

The release will position Amour as an awards season contender and as an alternative to major studio releases opening for the holidays.
