Magnolia Pictures has acquired US rights to Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s The Extra Man starring Kevin Kline and Paul Dano.

The film debuted in Sundance and stars Kline as a failed playwright turned escort for wealthy widows who introduces a struggling young writer to an eccentric array of New York characters.

Magnolia plans a late July theatrical release for the film, which will play throughout the spring festival circuit including stops at Sarasota and Boston.

Berman and Pulcini adapted the screenplay with Jonathan Ames from his novel of the same name. Anthony Bregman of Likely Story and Stephanie Davis of 3Arts produced.

Magnolia senior vice-president Tom Quinn negotiated the deal with Agnes Mentre and Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch, and CAA.
