Veki Velilla

The past two years have been something of a blur for Veki Velilla. “It’s gone so fast that I feel like I’m riding a speeding train,” says the Madrid-born actress, who stars in HBO Max series ¡García!.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, ¡García! is the story of a super-agent (played by Francisco Ortiz), created under Franco’s dictatorship, who wakes up more than half a century after being cryogenically frozen and teams with Velilla’s journalist Antonia. Together they take on a conspiracy that threatens to destroy Spain’s democracy.

“My character is lively, bright, strong but not willing to show her emotions in front of others, which makes her interesting to play… and adventurous,” says Velilla, who started work on ¡García! immediately after finishing Rtve Play series Yrreal.

Velilla took an interest in acting as a psychology exercise while studying for an education science degree, but quickly became hooked. She quit university and, after various parts in shorts and adverts, landed an agent and a role in Telecinco TV series Anclados in 2015. Velilla continued with acting classes, broadening her training with dancing, fencing and stage fighting. She was cast in more supporting roles in TV series such as Amar Es Para Siempre (Antena 3) and 2017 period drama Cathedral Of The Sea (Antena 3/Netflix), before landing the lead in ¡García!. In addition, Velilla shot slasher feature Killer Book Club for Netflix, and has been involved in two theatre productions in Madrid.

“With ¡García! I discovered I love action. That was my first experience in the genre and such fun… Psychology is what drew me to acting and keeps me hooked. As soon as I get a screenplay, I start taking notes, analysing my character in depth, why they react, what they do, how they talk. I try to get as close to their truth as I can.”
