Pakistan’s reinstated trans-themed submission Joyland, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On and Venice Golden Lion winner All The Beauty And The Bloodshed are among the eligible international, animation and documentary features announced by the Academy on Tuesday.

Ninety-two international feature film contenders, 27 animation hopefuls and 144 documentary contenders are in the running.

International feature film submissions include Corsage representing Austria, Argentina, 1985 from Argentina, Belgium’s Close, Bardo from Mexico, France’s Saint Omer, South Korea’s Decision To Leave, and Morocco’s The Blue Caftan.

Uganda is the only first-time entrant, with Tembele. Academy members from all branches can opt in to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must meet a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category. The shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 21.

Among the animation contenders are Wendell & Wild, Minions: The Rise Of Gru, The Sea Beast, Lightyear, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Strange World, and Inu-Oh.

The crop of documentary hopefuls includes Cow, Navalny, A House Made Of Splinters, Descendant, Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues, Three Minutes – A Lengthening, and Myanmar Diaries.

The Academy will announce its Oscar nominations on January 24 2023 ahead of the 95th awards ceremony on March 12 2023 in Hollywood.
