The Academy has launched an award recognising 50 cinemas around the world and will unveil the inaugural selections in spring 2027 during the institution’s centenary year.

Described by sources as more similar to a Michelin Guide and not an Oscar for cinemas, the Academy Marquee Theatre List will comprise 25 US and 25 international cinemas that demonstrate “exceptional audience experiences, preserve cinematic history and serve as cultural anchors in their communities”.

Applications are open through August 25 for bricks-and-mortar venues that operate year-round and screen first-run films or repertory screenings.

A selection committee will review submissions based on community engagement, visual and audio presentation, programming, diversity, inclusion and accessibility, historic significance and preservation, design, lighting and conditions, and concessions. Ticket price affordability is not one of the criteria.

A maximum of 10 cinemas operated by the same chain or owner may be submitted in a single submission cycle. Each submission will pay a fee to cover administration costs ranging from $250, $350 or $450 depending on the timing of the entry. Academy members with a vested interest in cinemas will not be eligible to serve on the selection committee.

The 50 cinemas will be featured on the Academy’s digital platforms, website and social media channels and will receive a physical certification to display in their lobbies.

Screen understands the certificate will be valid for one cycle and those selected will need to reapply in future cycles. The list is not currently designed as an annual event and will take place every two years.

Jason Reitman, an Academy governor who is part of a consortium of filmmakers who bought the Village Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles, and therefore will be excluded from serving on the selection committee, brought the idea to the Academy.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Lynette Howell Taylor said in a release, “From classic movie palaces, to multiplexes, to independent cinemas, the Academy Marquee Theater List will recognise the best movie theatres around the world and unite our global film industry.”
