Akinola Davies Jr, Laura Carreira

My Father’s Shadow filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr and On Falling writer-director Laura Carreira are among the 20 UK participants in the 2025 Bafta Breakthrough programme.

They are joined by Grand Theft Hamlet co-director Pinny Grylls, star of BBC series What It Feels Like For A Girl Ellis Howard and Harvest producer Marie-Elena Dyche.

BAFTA North America will announce the Breakthrough US talent in December.

The emerging talent year-round programme has been running since 2013 (previously known as Breakthrough Brits). Over 330 people have participated in the programme to date, with alumni including Paapa Essiedu, Josh O’Connor, Jessie Buckley and Letitia Wright. The initiative is supported by Netflix in the UK.

There will be no Bafta Breakthrough India cohort this year.
