‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’

Avatar: Fire And Ash dropped a mere 28% in its second weekend and added an estimated $64m to reach $217.7m through Disney, leading an energised session that saw A24’s Marty Supreme in third place soar to $28.3m after expanding wide for one of the biggest Christmas Days of all time for an R-rated film.

Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet grossed $9.5m on December 25, $17.5m over the three-day session and $27.1m over four days, following last weekend’s launch on 2,668 screens.

Disney’s Zootopia 2 ranked second on $20m for a $321.4m running total after five weekends, and Lionsgate’s thriller The Housemaid in fourth earned $15.4m following an excellent 19% drop for $46.5m.

Rounding out the top five was Sony’s adventure comedy Anaconda starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black on $14.6m, rising to $23.7m since the December 25 opening day.

Overall box office for the weekend generated $177.2m, propelling year-to-date to $8.76bn, up 1.5% on 2024 by the same stage.

Focus Features opened its true-life musical drama Song Sung Blue in eighth place on $7.6m for the three-day weekend and $12m since the December 25 debut. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson star as the Neil Diamond tribute act Lightning & Thunder.

Angel Studio’s animation David in sixth place added $12.7m after a 42% drop and stands at $49.8m. Wicked: For Good at number nine has reached $331.6m through Universal after six sessions. By comparison, the first instalment released a year ago finished on $474.9m.

In a big weekend for specialty films, Neon released Park Chan-wook’s South Korean satire and Oscar submission No Other Choice on $312,687 over three days and $625,656 over four for a $48,127 average.

Searchlight Pictures opened Mona Fastvold’s Venice selection The Testament Of Ann Lee starring Amanda Seyfried exclusively in 70mm in four New York and Los Angeles locations for $111,000 or $27,250 per site. The biopic of the founder of the Shaker Movement expands on January 16. Searchlight’s comedy drama Is This Thing On? starring Will Arnett and Laura Dern expanded and stands at $511,000.

Mubi opened Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother, another Lido premiere, in four screens in New York, Los Angeles and Montreal. The family drama earned $94,971 on four screens over five days, averaging $23,717. It expands nationwide on January 9.
