Production is underway in Lapland, Finland on Aku Louhimies’ Second World War epic Lapland War, which Beta Cinema has boarded for international sales ahead of next month’s American Film Market (AFM, November 11-16).
The film is produced by Louhimies and Andrei Alen’s Finnish company Backmann & Hoderoff; additional photography will take place in Southern Finland later this year. Beta will show a first promo of the film to buyers at AFM.
Lapland War is slated for release in autumn 2026; Nordisk Film will distribute the title in Scandinavia.
Set in Finland in 1944 as the war nears its end, the film takes in the stories of several young people, including Finnish soldiers Heikki and Pauli, who are approaching adulthood, and interpreter Saara Vainio, who leaves her husband for German officer Duisberg.
Louhimies describes the film as “a story about a generation of young people trying to make sense of the geopolitical upheaval surrounding them — which unfortunately makes it very current as well.”
Volker Bruch and Sannah Nedergard lead the cast.
Beta previously sold Louhimies’ 2017 feature The Unknown Soldier to more than 30 territories around the world; it remains the highest-grossing Finnish-language drama in the country’s history.
