Janus Films has acquired all North American rights to Carla Simón’s Romería, the Cannes competition world premiere that receives its North American premiere at New York Film Festival on October 6.
Simón’s feature follow-up to her 2022 Berlinale Golden Bear winner Alcarràs follows Marina, an 18-year-old orphan visiting her grandparents on Spain’s Atlantic coast for the first time, who pieces together memories of her parents through the stories of relatives with their own interests.
Newcomer Llúcia Garcia stars in the Spanish-German co-production produced by María Zamora of Elastica Films, Olimpia Pont-Cháfer of Ventall Cinema, and Àngels Masclans of DosSoles Media.
Janus Films negotiated the deal with mk2 Films and will open Romería theatrically in North America in 2026.
The distributor’s roster of Cannes acquisitions includes Lav Diaz’s Filiipino Oscar submission Magellan; Bo Gan’s Resurrection; Hlynur Pálmason’s Icelandic Oscar contender The Love That Remains; and Sergei Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors. Sundance premiere and New York Film Festival (September 26-October 13) selection Peter Hujar’s Day from Ira Sachs is also on the slate.
