’Magnus’

Canneseries, the annual TV festival running alongside the MIPTV content market in Cannes, has unveiled the competition line-up for its second edition (April 5-10).

The first two epsidoes from 10 new international series will screen in the main competition (apart from The Outbreak, which will screen only its first episode).

Titles include Channing Powell’s London-set psychological thriller The Feed for Amazon and Liberty Global. David Thewlis stars in the dystopian tale as the inventor of a brain implant that allows people to share thoughts and emotions alongside Guy Burnet, Michelle Fairley and Nina Toussaint-White as his family members.

Further contenders include Norwegian actor and writer Vidar Magnussen’s quirky NRK-backed police detective tale Magnus, in which he stars as a bumbling investigator bought into solve a case with supernatural elements in a remote part of Norway.

Also in in competition is Federation Entertainment’s The Twelve, the latest series from Belgian writers Bert Van Dael and Sanne Nuyens, who previously collaborated on crime drama Hotel Beau Séjour; and Japanese series Junichi, created by Hi Mitsunobu Kawamura, Eiji Kitahara and Cannes Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda. It is adapted from a novel by Areno Inuoe.

Swiss-born showrunner Baran bo Odar, whose credits include Dark, will preside over a jury also including actor, director and author Stephen Fry (Peter’s Friends, Blackadder, Gosford Park); actors Miriam Leone (Non uccidere), Emma Mackey (Sex Education) and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings); and composer Robin Coudert (The Bureau).

Out of Competition

The festival’s Out of Competition features an impressive array of eagerly awaited series. As previously announced, they include Cathy Verney’s adaptation of Virginie Despentes’s cult novels Vernon Subutex, starring Romain Duris as its titular on-his-uppers record store owner.

Further series due to play Out of Competition include Gurinder Chadha’s period drama Beecham House, set in India during British rule and co-written with Paul Mayeda Berges and Shahrukh Husain; and Gregg Araki’s sex comedy Now Apocalypse.

Special events

Alongside the screenings, there will also be masterclasses by UK actress Diana Rigg, who will talk about her career, ranging from the iconic show The Avengers to more recently Game Of Thrones; and Steven Knight, creator of Peaky BlindersTabooEastern Promises and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Canneseries was launched in 2018 to showcase and celebrate international drama series from around the world. Former French culture minister Fleur Pellerin runs the event alongside general manager Benoît Louvet. The artistic director is Albin Lewi.
