Disney+ is lining up supernatural anthology series Night Tales Club, directed by six of Japan’s leading genre filmmakers.
The project is set to premiere in January 2027 with stories directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Wife Of A Spy), Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on), Shinzo Katayama (Gannibal), Yukiko Sode (All the Lovers in the Night), Yuichiro Sakashita and Yosuke Nakamura.
The series adapts six stories by Japanese horror writer Ichi Sawamura and stars Takayuki Yamada as Hojo, a wealthy businessman obsessed with unexplained phenomena. Convinced that ghost stories, monsters, curses and other supernatural anomalies are “bugs” that lead to a deeper conspiracy, Hojo creates the Night Tales Club, inviting people who have encountered the unexplained to share both their experiences and evidence in exchange for ¥20m ($130,000) in gold.
The Hojo sequences, which tie the tales together, are directed by Kenji Nakajima of Netflix series The Naked Director, which also starred Yamada. Producers are Yusuke Wakabayashi and Teruhisa Yamamoto. Sawamura also wrote the scripts, based on his own collection of stories.
It marks an ongoing expansion for Disney+ originals in Japan, which have previously included folk horror thriller Gannibal, which was the streaming platform’s most-viewed premiere in Q2 2024 and the fastest title to reach a million hours viewed on Disney+ in Japan. Further titles include supernatural mystery Land Of Tanabata and upcoming romantic comedy Merry Berry Love.
