The North American deal returns Jonathan Caouette to the limelight after the filmmaker caused a sensation in 2003 with his autobiographical documentary Tarnation.

Walk Away Renee once again trains the camera on Caouette’s life as he takes his mentally ill mother on a cross-country road trip.

The film premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week and the filmmaker is polishing off the final version ahead of another major festival appearance, with speculation centering on Telluride or Toronto.

Caouette said the upcoming edit would include “more backstory and texture than the Cannes version.”

“We were deeply moved by Jonathan Caouette’s Walk Away Renee which continues to document not only his relationship with his mother Renee LeBlanc but also shows him making great strides as a filmmaker,” Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring said. “We’re thrilled to be in business with him and continue our relationship with Agnes B’s Love Streams and Wild Bunch.”

Arianna Bocco brokered the deal for the distributor with Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch.
