‘Making Marie Antoinette’

Mubi has acquired worldwide rights for Making Marie Antoinette, a documentary about the making of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette.

Mubi will announce release plans for the film in the near future.

Making Marie Antoinette is directed by Sofia’s mother Eleanor Coppola, and produced by Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley and Sofia Coppola.

Finance came from Our Films, Mediawan Rights and Entourage Pictures.

The film depicts the production of Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, including being the first production ever to be granted permission to film at France’s Palace of Versailles, and what it was like to be a young female director at that time.

Passages from Eleanor’s journals about her experiences on set and relationship with Sofia are voiced by Diane Lane.

Marie Antoinette debuted in Competition at Cannes in 2006, with Milena Canonero winning best costume design for the film at the following year’s Oscars.

“My mother and I started going through her footage during lockdown,” said Sofia Coppola. “It was always her wish to make what she shot into a feature-length documentary.”

Mubi previously acquired international rights excluding North America and Italy on Sofia Coppola’s 2023 feature Priscilla and released the film in territories including the UK-Ireland, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Latin America and Turkey.
