‘The Damp’

EXCLUSIVE: The cast of upcoming Taiwanese horror The Damp has been unveiled, and includes singer/songwriter Andr and Ayako from girl group Genblue in their film debuts, alongside Left-Handed Girl’s Janel Tsai

A first look at the film can be seen above.

Marking the first horror feature of Taiwanese director Fu Tien-yu, the story follows an introverted student who discovers that girls who drowned in a nearby river have fused with moisture itself. They become an invasive force that seeps into the air, water, and skin, invading the living from within.

Blending supernatural horror with Taiwan’s pervasive humidity, the film is set for a local release in Q2 2027 through producer Steve Wang’s Activator. Wang produces alongside Jeff Yeh, with Jake Pollock as cinematographer.

The film is positioned as a fresh addition to the new wave of Asian horror, following the international success of Taiwanese genre titles such as Detention and Incantation.

International sales are handled by Singapore’s Mokster Films, which also has Welcome To Dolly’s House and Red Thread on its ACFM slate. Both titles are playing in Busan’s Midnight Passion section.

Fu made her feature directorial debut with Somewhere I Have Never Travelled in 2009, while The Happy Life Of Debbie was named best miniseries/TV movie at the Golden Bell Awards in 2012. Her most recent feature is 2023’s Day Off, which won critical acclaim and prizes at Osaka Asian Film Festival, Udine’s Far East Film Festival, Taipei Film Festival and Golden Horse Awards.

In 2024, she was awarded the Kurosawa Akira Award by Tokyo International Film Festival to recognise her continuing the tradition of the Taiwan New Cinema from the 1980s. She is only the second Taiwanese filmmaker to receive this award, after auteur Hou Hsiao-hsien.
