Germany has selected Sandra Wollner’s Everytime as its submission for the international feature film category for the 99th Academy Awards.
Two other German productions, İlker Çatak’s Berlinale Golden Bear winner Yellow Letters and Visar Morina’s Sundance grand jury prize winner Shame And Money, also qualify for submission to the international film category. This follows the recent Academy rule change which allows films that have won the major awards at selected international film festivals to be entered for the category - if the filmmakers choose to do so. They are not automatically entered.
A nine-member jury appointed by German Films selected Everytime as the country’s Oscar candidate from a longlist of 11 films.
The film is a psychological drama about a tragedy that brings a mother, daughter and teenage boy together for a trip to Tenerife for a family holiday that never happened, as they explore grief, loss, and their ability to blur time and reality.
Everytime won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes this year, and has played at festivals including Sydney, Karlovy Vary, New Zealand and Melbourne. It recently won the Heart of Sarajevo grand prize. Its North American premiere takes place in Toronto on September 15.
The German-Austrian co-production was produced by The Barricades and ZDF together with Austria’s Panama Film as a co-production partner. The film received funding from the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
German distributor eksystent filmverleih Kijas released Everytime in German cinemas on August 6. Charades handles international sales, and has sold Everytime to more than 30 territories worldwide. In North America 1-2 Special is handling distribution, with a qualifying run followed by theatrical release in early 2027.
