The Golden Globes organisation has updated its awards rules on the use of AI in projects and on performances in non-English language and independent films.
The changes were announced a week after the US Academy revealed changes in its rules regarding AI and non-English language films for the 99th Oscars.
For the 84th Golden Globes, non-English language and independent films (defined as under-$10m projects funded by independent producers, private investors or small production companies) “may be submitted for individual Best Performance categories without being submitted in the Best Motion Picture category, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements,” according to the new Globes rules.
On artificial intelligence, including generative AI, the rules say its use “does not automatically disqualify a work from consideration, provided that human creative direction, artistic judgment, and authorship remain primary throughout the production process.”
Submitted work ”will be evaluated based on the extent to which creative direction, artistic decision-making, and execution originate from credited individuals,” the rules add, and submissions “must include a disclosure of any generative AI used anywhere in the production of the completed work including if any AI alteration was made to a credited performer’s likeness, or voice.”
Performances submitted for the Globes’ acting categories “must be primarily derived from the work of the credited performer. Submissions in which a performance is substantially generated or created by artificial intelligence are not eligible. The use of artificial intelligence in connection with a performance does not automatically render a submission ineligible, provided such tools are used only to enhance or support a performance that remains fundamentally human-driven and under the creative control of the credited performer, and that any such use is authorised by the performer.”
The Globes also announced that its submissions website will this year open on June 1, two months earlier than last year.
Nominations for the 84th Golden Globes will be announced on December 7 and winners will be revealed at the Globes ceremony on January 10, 2027.
