Short film and animation festival to take place in Bristol from Sept 18-23.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto, ParaNorman co-director Sam Fell and Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas [pictured] are set to attend the 18th Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival.

Longinotto and Thomas will take part in on-stage sessions on Sept 21, while Fell will be in attendance at the screening (presented by Directors UK) of his latest film ParaNorman - which he co-directed with Chris Butler - for a post-screening Q&A on Sept 20.

Other guests attending the festival, which runs Sept 18-23, include Four Lions cinematographer Lol Crawley who will host this year’s BAFTA Craft Masterclass (Sept 20), and director Paul Bush with the festival hosting a retrospective programme of his work, as well as a screening of his latest feature Babeldom (Sept 21) and a masterclass with Bush (Sept 20).

Encounters’ Artistic Director Mark Cosgrove commented: “An important part of Encounters is the opportunity for young and emerging filmmakers to hear the hard earned experience and wisdom of established filmmaking figures and we are delighted to welcome to this year’s event a range of talent from live action and animation. In attracting such leading names to Bristol, the festival also continues to play a unique role in making the city a centre of excellence in the creative industries.”

A selection of animated films from Soviet Russia, a focus on Finnish shorts and a look at the early years of Aardman are among the guest programmes scheduled for this year’s festival.
