EXCLUSIVE: LevelK has secured key deals on animation Checkered Ninja 3, just days after it recorded the third-largest opening weekend in history at the Danish box office.
The film has sold to Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Splendid Film), France, (Koba Films), Spain and Latin America (Cinemaran), the Middle East (Empire Networks), Portugal (Outsider Films), Greece (Filmtrade), Netherlands (Just4Kids), Bulgaria (Pro Films), Turkey (Siyah Beyaz Movies) and Indonesia (PT Falcon).
Checkered Ninja 3 opened in Denmark last weekend through Nordisk Film, selling almost 200,000 tickets. It is surpassed only by the first two films in the franchise, from 2018 and 2021 – both of which are among the top 10 best-selling Danish films of all time with more than 900,000 tickets sold each.
The final title in the franchise, Checkered Ninja 3 also sold the most preview tickets of the three, at 36,339.
The third film sees protagonist Alex’s interest in ninja missions start to recede in favour of spending time with friends; as the Checkered Ninja feels he is overlooked and wants to engage in a new mission.
The film is directed by Anders Matthesen and Thorbjorn Christoffersen, written by Matthesen and produced by Trine Heidegaard and Anders Mastrup for Pop Up Production, A Film Production and Sudoku.
Backers include the Danish Film Institute, Nordisk Film Distribution and the Estonian Film Institute.
The franchise was created by Danish comedian and actor Matthesen, who wrote the books on which the films are based.
“It’s a bit sad to say goodbye to the Checkered Ninja, but when it has to happen, it’s wonderful to end on such a high note,” said LevelK founder and CEO Tine Klint. “At the same time, I’m confident that this incredibly talented creative team has plenty more exciting stories ahead.”
“We are completely overwhelmed by the good reviews and the interest we have experienced during the premiere weekend. In a declining market, this is a fabulous result,” said Heidegaard.
