‘Dead Dad Girl’

EXCLUSIVE: Filming is underway on dark comedy Dead Dad Girl, the debut feature from Luxembourgish filmmaker Stephen Korytko.

The English-language feature began its Luxembourg shoot in July and will continue until August 25. A first look image has been unveiled.

Producers are Bernard Michaux of Luxembourg’s Samsa Film, with credits including Cannes Un Certain Regard 2022 title Corsage, alongside the US co-creators of TV series Silicon Valley John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, plus Belgium’s Benoît Roland for Wrong Men, behind Cannes Un Certain Regard 2023 selection Omen. The film is officially set up as a Luxembourg-Belgium coproduction.

Dead Dad Girl is a coming-of-age story about a 17-year-old sharp-tongued misfit, with a complicated family background. When her shot at popularity coincides with her drug dealer dad dying, she hides his body in a chest freezer and pretends everything’s fine.

Comedian Alexia Verbeke has written the script, with a cast including Mabel Thomas in the lead role, alongside Luc Schiltz, Sophie Mousel and Louise Balthazar.

It is backed by Film Fund Luxembourg and the Belgian Tax Shelter scheme.

Korytko has a background in directing commercials. His 2023 short, The Golden Record, premiered at Tallinn in 2023.

“This has been one of the most rewarding creative collaborations of our career,” said Altschuler and Krinsky. “Working with Bernard and the team in Luxembourg has brought a distinct texture and spirit to the film — one that makes Dead Dad Girl truly stand out.”

Michaux added: “Working on Dead Dad Girl has been a joyful and creatively rich experience. Luxembourg has given the film a unique energy and I couldn’t be more grateful to collaborate with such talented artists — from Stephen Korytko’s sharp direction to Alexia Verbeke’s brilliantly funny script and Mabel Thomas’s captivating performance.”
