Disgraced former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced by a New York court to 15 years in prison for a felony sex act against the former Project Runway assistant Miriam Haley.
Wednesday’s sentencing in Lower Manhattan stems from a conviction in 2025 and was the latest development in a six-year legal battle by Haley, who alleged she was sexually assaulted by Weinstein in his Manhattan apartment in 2006.
According to reports Haley told the court that being sexually assaulted by Weinstein had had a devastating effect on her life and left her looking over her shoulder for years to come. “It’s a life sentence for me,” she said.
Weinstein, 74, appeared in court handcuffed in a wheelchair, and said he was not perfect and lived with regret, although he maintained his innocence.
A conviction for criminal sexual act in the first degree carries a maximum term of 25 years. Prosecutors asked for 20 years and Weinstein’s defence lawyers argued for nine. The judge handed down 15 in recognition of the defendant’s age and poor health and ruled that after the sentence Weinstein will be required to register as a sex offender.
Haley first testified against Weinstein in the landmark #MeToo 2020 New York trial when he was sentenced to 23 years. The trial was subsequently overturned by a New York appellate court, and when Haley testified again at the early summer 2025 retrial, the jury returned a mixed partial verdict, finding Weinstein guilty of criminal sexual act in the first degree against her. The jury did not find him guilty on the same charge involving former Polish model and actress Kaja Sokola in 2006.
The disgraced former Hollywood mogul is also serving a 16-year sentence for a Los Angeles rape conviction in 2023 after he was convicted of raping an actress in 2013.
