EXCLUSIVE: Noomi Rapace has joined the cast of Isabella Eklof’s Mr. Nawashi, the first film to be made under the Dogma25 initiative launched last year.
Rapace joins the cast with Peter Haber and Ina Miriam-Rosenbaum, alongside previously announced leads Esben Smed and Tanya Holm Anderson. Screen can reveal first looks at the film, above and below.
Mr. Nawashi is a love story following Katarina, an ambitious and talented singer with an appetite for life but little self-discipline. When she meets the mysterious Mr. Nawashi online, her eyes are opened to a new world – a BDSM relationship in which unwavering submission and devotion are met with attention, care, strict coaching, and a tantalising play with physical pain.
The film is produced by Denmark’s Zentropa, as the first of the five projects to come from the Dogma25 initiative. The programme was launched last year at Cannes film festival, uniting five filmmakers to make feature films based on a shared manifesto. Germany then launched its own version this year, with a UK version also in the works to be headed by Mia Bays once she leaves her BFI Filmmaking Funds director role in October.
Eklof is joined by May el-Toukhy, Milad Alami, Annika Berg and Jesper Just on the initiative.
The projects are financed in collaboration between Zentropa, DR, and Nordisk Film Distribution. Netflix joined the projects earlier this year with core financing, and will release the films in the Nordics after their theatrical runs. A theatrical release for Mr. Nawashi is planned for 2027.
Mr. Nawashi is produced with support from the Danish Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute and Eastern Denmark Film Fund.
The film reunites Rapace with Haber, with the duo having starred together in 2009 crime drama The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
