Netflix will co-finance all five of the first films in the Dogma 25 initiative as production begins on the first title, Isabella Eklof’s Mr. Nawashi.
Nordisk Film Distribution will handle Nordic distribution on the Dogma 25 films, with the titles launching on Netflix in the Nordic region in the pay-1 window.
The Netflix partnership is “to secure the core financing necessary to realise all five projects”, according to TrustNordisk, which is handling international sales on the five films in Cannes. The film is aiming for a theatrical release in 2027.
Danish actor Esben Smed stars Mr. Nawashi, alongside Tanya Holm Andersen. The film follows Katarina, an ambitious and talented singer with an appetite for life but little self-discipline.
When she meets the mysterious Mr. Nawashi online, her eyes are opened to a new world – a BDSM relationship in which unwavering submission and devotion are met with attention, care, strict coaching, and tantalising play with physical pain.
The film is written and directed by Eklof, and co-financed by the Danish Film Institute and Swedish Film Institute.
The Dogma 25 initiative was launched at Cannes Film Festival last year by directors May el-Toukhy, Milad Alami, Annika Berg, Jesper Just and Eklof. Thirty years after the original Dogma movement, the new initiative included 10 rules aimed at preserving “the originality of cinema”.
Netflix in the Nordics joins Zentropa, DR and Nordisk Film Distribution in financing the five features.
