‘Weightless’

EXCLUSIVE: Reinvent International Sales has boarded Emilie Thalund’s teenage drama Weightless ahead of its world premiere at San Sebastian film festival next month.

Weightless will launch in the New Directors strand at San Sebastian. Reinvent handles international sales, with Scanbox Entertainment distributing in Denmark.

The film is Danish director Thalund’s debut feature, written by Marianne Lentz. It follows Lea, a 15-year-old girl spending her summer at a health camp. Determined to lose weight, she longs to be like her lively new roommate Sasha; but while Sasha seeks attention from local boys, Lea’s heart is set on Rune, a charming instructor from the camp, whose reciprocated attention awakens an unfamiliar desire within Lea.

The film is produced by Anna Dammegaard Sollested and Clara Jantzen Kreinoe for Denmark’s Snowglobe.

Marie Helweg Augustsen leads the cast, alongside Ella Paaske, Joachim Fjelstrup and Jessica Dinnage.

Weightless is supported by the Danish Film Institute’s New Danish Screen initiative in collaboration with DR and SVT.

“I wanted to portray a young girl’s sexual and emotional awakening with both empathy and seriousness,” said Thalund. “The film explores the balance between the longing for love and recognition, and the power structures that arise when this longing encounters adult sexuality.

“The film seeks to give a voice to a type of girl we rarely see in cinema, and to take her longing seriously - aiming to authentically reflect the conditions she navigates the world under.”
