Wolfe Video has acquired North American rights to Sebastián Lelio’s Cannes Premiere entry The Wave (La Ola) starring newcomer Daniela López.

The film centres on Julia (López), a dedicated music student who unexpectedly becomes the central figure in a feminist uprising at her university.

Through dancing and singing at protest marches with her peers, Julia’s testimony of harassment and abuse becomes the spark that challenges her polarised society. The cast includes Lola Bravo, Avril Aurora and Paulina Cortés.

Lelio co-wrote The Wave with Manuela Infante, Josefina Fernández and Paloma Salas. Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, Lelio and Rocío Jadue produced for Fabula Productions, and Christian Vesper and Seb Shorr served as execxutive producers for Fremantle, with Robert Kessel and David Linde for Participant, and Mariane Hartard for Fabula Productions. Participant and Fremantle were the co-financiers.

Lelio said: “We are living in a time of intense polarization worldwide, and La Ola (The Wave) invites us to open our minds to the possibility that humour, song, dancing, and overflowing emotion can help us better comprehend the dilemmas we face today through a celebration that explores challenging and complex issues.”

“Wolfe Video is officially reborn with our acquisition of La Ola (The Wave),” Evan Schwartz, head of content for Wolfe Video, said. “I am beyond excited to partner with the titans of industry at Fabula, Fremantle and FilmNation in this transformative moment for Wolfe Video’s legacy. I can’t wait for audiences to experience Sebastián’s cinematic musical statement next year.”

Schwartz negotiated the deal with FilmNation on behalf of the filmmakers. Wolfe Video plans a 2026 theatrical release.
