Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) has revealed the titles set to compete at its upcoming 27th edition, including the latest features by Cao Baoping, Aktan Arym Kubat and Antonio Ferreira.
They are among 49 titles that will vie for its Golden Goblet Awards, including 12 each from the main competition and the Asian New Talent competition, most of which are world premieres.

A trio from China are running in the main competition, including Cao Baoping’s Tianjin-set crime comedy drama One Wacky Summer; Qiu Sheng’s latest China-France collaboration My Father’s Son; and Wang Tong’s feature debut Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, starring Wan Qian and A Cool Fish director Rao Xiaozhi in his big screen acting debut.
All but one of the main competition titles are world premieres, which also comprise Aktan Arym Kubat’s Black Red Yellow from Kyrgyzstan, Miriam Heard’s Chile-UK-France co-production After The Fog and António Ferreira’s Portugal-Brazil co-production The Scent Of Things Remembered. Korek Bojanowski’s Loss Of Balance will receive its international premiere at SIFF.
The Asian New Talent competition will showcase 12 feature debuts across the region from China, Japan, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Iran, India and the Philippines. Among the nine premieres are five from China: Bian Zhuo’s As The Water Flows, Cheng Liang’s Odds Beater, Qiu Yujie’s Seven Days, Shi Renfei’s The Last Summer, and Fang Liang’s Water Can Go Anywhere. Japanese director Yuiga Danzuka’s Brand New Landscape will make an Asian premiere, following its recent debut at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight.
Further entries from the documentary and animation categories - five apiece - along with 15 from the short film category round up the Golden Goblet Awards lineup.
The awards has set a new submissions record, receiving more than 2,800 entires across its five competition sections, with a notable increase from the Americas and Africa.
The international jury panel comprises 21 members from Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe, with Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore of Oscar-winning Cinema Paradiso as jury president of the main competition.
SIFF has long served as a springboard for Chinese-language cinema and emerging talents across Asia. Under the theme of “Asian, Chinese Film, and New Talents,” around 60 Chinese-language films are expected to be screened, spanning competition entries, premieres, and restored classics.
For the first time, the SIFF Film Market will be merged with the Shanghai TV Festival’s market to form a joint international film and TV market. SIFF’s 27th edition will run from June 13-22, which will be immediately followed by Shanghai TV Festival from June 23-27.
As previously announced, the first part of She’s Got No Name directed by Peter Chan and starring Zhang Ziyi will open SIFF. The 1940s Shanghai-set crime thriller premiered out of competition at Cannes last year with a runtime of 150 minutes and is now to be divided into two parts for release.
