Animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 will debut next year on Netflix with additional characters not in the live-action run, according to Netflix Animation head of series John Derderian.
Netflix debuted a first look at Tales From ’85 as part of its slate presentation this afternoon at Annecy International Animation Film Festival. ”We’re pushing the boundaries of what animation can be with Tales From ’85,” said Derderian. ”Today, we get an exclusive first look at this series launching globally next year on Netflix.”
Tales From ’85 is set in the town of Hawkins in the winter of 1985, where the characters must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorising the town.
The series will feature the familiar characters from the popular live-action series, plus additional characters including Nikki Baxter, one of the group of youngsters.
It will also feature new monsters not in the original series, including one described by showrunner Eric Robles as “a snow shark for Hawkins.”
Speaking on-stage in Annecy, Robles said he was inspired in creating the look for the series by the work of Meybis Ruiz Cruz, a fan of the live-action series who had done animated drawings of the characters.
Robles also defined the look of the animated series as “electric saturation”, and said it was also inspired by animated series from the 1980s including Ghostbusters and Transformers.
Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, creators of the original series, are executive producing the animated series through their Upside Down Pictures with Hilary Leavitt, plus Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen through 21 Laps and Robles through Flying Bark Productions, animation studio for the series.
The final season of the live-action Stranger Things series will start with four episodes on November 26; three on December 25; and the final

The streamer also welcomed director Alex Woo to present family feature In Your Dreams, alongside production designer Steven Pilcher and VFX supervisor Nicola Lavender. In Your Dreams follows two children journeying into the absurd landscape of their dreams, including a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the Sandman.
Tomorrow in Annecy BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg will participate in a masterclass tomorrow about his career, after a screening of the first episode of his new animated series Long Story Short, which launches on Netflix on August 22.
