EXCLUSIVE: BFI Distribution has acquired UK-Ireland rights to Ed Sayers’ documentary Super Nature ahead of its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival (LFF) on Sunday, October 12.
Sayers’ debut feature is filmed entirely on the Super 8 home movie format, and sees 40 collaborators from 25 countries – from professional filmmakers to local enthusiasts – create stories of the natural world.
BFI Distribution will put the film in UK-Ireland cinemas in 2026, including its BFI Imax venue in London. The film will play in the documentary competition at LFF.
Super Nature is produced by Sayers, Rebecca Wolff and Beth Allan, for Seven Productions and Grasp the Nettle Films, co-produced by Forest of Black.
Backers include BFI Doc Society, Screen Scotland, Cinelab Film and Digital, Foghorn Features and Autlook Filmsales, the latter of which handles international sales.
The film also received backing from the UK Global Screen Fund’s international distribution strand via a festival launch support grant.
“It struck us that Super Nature could appeal to so many different people – from lovers of gorgeous, tactile film formats and the straight 8 fans, to eco-conscious communities, and a much wider audience who will be swept away by the film’s emotional charge and its joyous celebration of nature,” said Laura Dos Santos, BFI head of acquisitions. “Sustainability is central to the BFI’s strategy and Super Nature could be an environmental game-changer as well as a real crowd-pleaser. The BFI IMAX screenings will be breathtaking!”
“[BFI Distribution] have a mighty track record for taking singular films to a wide audience,” said Sayers. “Their passion and plans for the release of Super Nature are beyond compelling.”
Wolff recently produced Bifa-winning documentary Grand Theft Hamlet; Allan produced 2024 documentary Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands; and Sayers started the Straight 8 Super 8 filmmaking competition, which holds premieres at festivals including Cannes.
