‘The Guest’

EXCLUSIVE: LevelK has boarded international sales on family drama The Guest starring Trine Dyrholm.

The company will introduce the film to buyers at this week’s Cannes Marche du Film (May 12-20).

Currently in the final stages of post-production, The Guest is the debut feature of director Mads Mengel, written by Mengel and Christian Bengtson. It begins the day before a young couple christen their firstborn child, when the father’s own mother turns up uninvited having not spoken to her son for years. She is determined to prove her worth as a grandmother and mother, leading to a weekend of revived painful memories and long-buried family dynamics.

Dyrholm stars alongside rising Danish star Simon Bennebjerg, Josephine Park, Mette Klakstein Wiberg, Peter Gantzler and Petrine Agger. The film shot mainly at the Marienlyst Strandhotel, in Helsingor, Denmark.

It is produced by Victor Cunha for Copenhagen-based Monolit Film, which has previously made titles including 2022 San Sebastian entry The Great Silence and CPH:DOX 2025 non-fiction feature Death Of A Saint.

The Guest was supported by the Danish Film Institute through its New Danish Screen scheme; Scanbox Entertainment is handling Nordic distribution.

“With The Guest, I want to remind all of us that it is never too late to pick up the pieces of a broken relationship,” explains Mengel. “That even what has felt stuck for years can shift when we dare to look at it with fresh eyes.”

“A young emerging talent like Mads joining forces with Monolit’s seasoned production team is a combination built to deliver standout results,” said LevelK CEO Tine Klint. “This collaboration forms a partnership designed for both creative and commercial success.”

“Most of us know what it means to love someone who is also difficult to be close to, and to navigate the fragile line between loyalty, guilt and self-protection within a family,” said Cunha. “From the beginning, we believed this was exactly the kind of intimate, character-driven drama that still belongs on the big screen.”

LevelK’s Cannes lineup includes crime comedy-drama Chasing Millions, Icelandic thriller Disturbed, and The Pension Heist.
